What Motivates Change?  Translating Theory into Practice
January 21 - 22, 2012
Saturday, 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

This training is for helping professionals who are in the role of counseling clients/patients to make and sustain healthy behavior changes: nurses, physicians, life coaches, personal trainers, dietitians, care managers, counselors, social workers, health educators, etc.

Training Objectives:  At the end of the training, attendees will be able to:

  • Apply the theories and principles of Motivational Interviewing (MI).
  • Understand the paradox of change; describe the spirit of MI.
  • Use appropriate techniques to open the conversation.
  • Ask open-ended questions to get the client to identify their own reasons/motivation to change/adhere/comply.
  • Use listening skills, including reflections, to allow the client to hear their ‘change talk’ and guide participants toward change.
  • Provide feedback, information or education in a motivation-enhancing way.
  • Summarize and close the conversation to maximize effectiveness.
